A Bit About Me

My name is Skylar Jennings, and I am a Howard University Alumna. At Howard, I was Political Science major, Journalism minor. Following my matriculation at Howard University, I plan on attending law school. After law school, I will become a journalist, focusing on politics and laws in American government.

Although it may seem that I have my ten year plan settled, I am not there yet. In the meantime, I have created Skylar Speaks which is a new outlook on news. As someone who is a part of the Generation-Z, I know that news is heading towards a new direction. The days of people turn their radios or televisions to news channels are coming to an end, with the constant of progression of social media. Being a part of that change, I wanted to create my own newsroom that appeals to my generation.

Work Experience

September 2020 - January 2021

October 2021

June - August 2022

Oye Owolewa Camapign

During my Sophomore year at Howard, I worked as a campaign intern for the Oye Owolewa for D.C. Shadow Representative Campaign. My roles consisted of running the campaign's social media pages, calling congresspeople to support the campaign, and attending various press meeting. There, I learned I had no intention to work in government. Instead, I wanted to cover stakeholders in the government.

RevoltTV

During my Junior year at Howard, students took over Blackburn Cafe, a popularly used dining hall on campus. Students were protesting unsanitary living conditions, lack of dormitories, and lack of transparency on where funds were being allocated. After reporting on the protest for a school organization called Spotlight, I reached out to Revolt TV to report on the continuation of the protests and mold in the dorms. I was hired as a freelance editorial writer, and my first article was published on October 22, 2021.

Meta & NowThis News

In the summer of 2022, I had the opportunity to work as a n HBCU Summer News Fellow for Meta, and I was partnered to work as a social media intern for NowThis News. My responsibilities for NowThis were to assist in gaining engagement on the Meta based platforms (Instagram and Facebook). During my fellowship, I created Instagram Reels and Stories. One of my notable projects was my Instagram Reel explaining how the U.S. Supreme Court was able to overturn Roe v. Wade.

September - December 2022

Adobe

In the Fall 2022 semester, I started my role as Government & Policy intern at Adobe.
